TITLE TPAAE - Transcultural Perspectives in Art and Art Education

AGREEMENT NUMBER 872718

FUNDING PROGRAMME H2020-MSCA-RISE-2019

CONSORTIUM Academy of Art in Szczecin (Poland - coordinator), University of Macerata (Italy), National Museum in Szczecin (Poland), Pwani University (Kilifi - Kenya), Kenyatta University (Nairobi - Kenya), Beneath the Baobabs (Kilifi - Kenya)

RUNTIME from February 2020 to January 2024

SHORT DESCRIPTION The project objective is to investigate contemporary art in Europe and Africa, and forms of art education on both continents. Contemporary art on the international scene is highly Western oriented, although interest in non-European art is present in Europe since more then a century and its recognition as an art and not just artifact dates easily 50 years back. The influence of African art on European one, especially Avantgarde is the subject already researched. It is interesting however also to search for the understanding of contemporary African art in the global plane, in relation to Western art, but also identifying itself in its local context. It is very common that African artists do not have formal university education. This does not mean that they are self-taught, because usually they gain experience and earn during artistic residencies around the world. The good trend that can be observed is that they tend to come back to the university for their degree and maybe for future teaching. Education in art and design in African universities varies from education in Europe, minding the dominating media, preferred forms and styles, possible future after the university. Teaching of fine arts in Kenya can be supported with the European knowledge in the field, while European researchers might obtain the knowledge and experience of communal ways of art and design creation and functioning.

Within the TPAAE project we want to conduct research on art and art education in Kenya, Italy, Czech Republic and Poland, supporting the development of intercultural dialogue, empowerment of local communities,  preservation of cultural heritage and cultural development especially in the coastal region of Kenya.Within the project we want to realize in years 2020-2023:

- Four art festivals “Duets” – based on the close cooperation of Polish or Czech artist with Kenyan one, and with the workshop groups in such areas as: dance, music, video, photography, painting, crafts, architecture, food and fashion (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 – April);

- Two visits to Poland and two visits to Czech Republic (gallery shows, exhibitions, artist’s talks, presentations) (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 – October);

- 4 study visits to Kenya, Pwani University and Kenyatta University: preparation, implementation and monitoring of implementation of programmes in art and design at Pwani University on the level of diploma and on undergraduate level (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023: February-May);

- Study visits to Poland, Czech Republic and Italy – seminars and workshops on art education.

Planned effects of the project are two folded:

1) elaboration and implementation of the programme of art and design at Pwani University in Kenya, based on understanding of local context and international requirements in perspective of transcultural aesthetics;

2) supporting the development of art scene in the region of Kilifi, where there fruitful artistic research and interaction would take place, concretizing itself in festivals in Kilifi and exhibitions in Poland, Czech Republic and Italy.
